HMRC to Temporarily Close Self Assessment Tax Helpline for Summer: What You Need to Know
16/06/2023
HMRC has announced the temporary closure of the self assessment tax helpline for three months during the summer period. From 12 June to 4 September, all calls to the helpline will be redirected to HMRC's digital services, including online guidance, digital assistants, and webchat. This decision aims to prioritize call centre resources for handling more urgent phone enquiries, as demand for the helpline is significantly lower during the summer.
While this move may optimize HMRC's resources, concerns have been raised regarding the impact on taxpayers, especially those who are digitally excluded or have limited access to digital platforms. It also leaves taxpayers with no means of contacting HMRC by phone for queries related to tax payments due on 31 July 2023. The helpline will reopen on 4 September, providing support in the months leading up to the self assessment deadline on 31 January 2024.
To mitigate the impact, HMRC encourages taxpayers to explore its online services, including the HMRC app, which have been enhanced for ease of use. The organization aims to transform its online services, making them the default option for the majority of customers. Taxpayers are advised to familiarize themselves with these digital alternatives and utilize them for their tax-related needs.
